JDC's remit is not just about buildings, it's also about enhancing people's lives by improving the public realm, creating green spaces and providing attractive areas to live, work and play.
The quality and extent of these open public areas provides an excellent arena for various events and we are keen to be supportive to see the Waterfront areas being used for a variety of public and charitable events.
Public areas include:
THE WEIGHBRIDGE:
In 2008, the former bus terminus was revitalised and converted into a public square and events venue, spanning an area of 4,400 sq.m. The transformation included the addition of both hard/soft landscaping, street furniture, al fresco dining space for nearby establishments and a designated Pétanque area. The versatile space serves as a host for various public events including the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon, Liberation Day celebrations and the Christmas light switch-on.
LES JARDINS DE LA MER:
The development of the reclamation site called 'West of Albert' commenced in 1981, starting with the construction of the Elizabeth Port ferry terminal. In 1998, Les Jardins was successfully completed, featuring public gardens, a prominent water feature, and the well-known La Frégate Cafe. This expansive area offers ample space for hosting a variety of events, including the weekly Waterfront Junior Park Run, the Madeira Festival and the Triathlon.
MARINA GARDENS:
The Waterfront car park, which was completed in 2000, includes the Marina Gardens - a green space with a spacious lawn and landscaped areas surrounding the green on the roof of the car park. Events have included the showing of the World Cup Football, Super League Triathlon and the Island Walk.
TRENTON SQUARE:
Named after the capital of New Jersey, Trenton Square was delivered with the completion of IFC 5 in 2018 at the IFC. A lawned area and granite paving with over 1,400 plants and 23 trees have been planted, and the space will be extended further once IFC 6 is completed at the end of 2023. Seating areas have been incorporated for the public to take their lunch or coffee break within the surrounding areas.
