Durrell’s Tortoise Takeover inspires art workshops at St Helier Primary Schools

With Durrell’s Tortoise Takeover trail in full swing, Jersey Development Company (JDC) has enlisted the skills of their jointly sponsored tortoise artist MrASingh to deliver art workshops at two St Helier primary schools during his brief visit from Birmingham. The initiative co-insides with the Tortoise Takeover trail launch, alongside joint sponsor Coopers & Co Jersey of ‘Aasimah’, created by MrASingh, located at Marina Gardens at St Helier Waterfront.

MrASingh, also known as Amrit, is a highly acclaimed artist, content creator and public speaker. He is renowned for producing vibrant sculptures for public art trails around the UK and creating vibrant ink art that is sold worldwide. His recent projects include the Polka Dot Elmer sculpture located outside Petworth House and Nadiya Egg sculpture for the Eurovision song contest in Liverpool. In 2019, Amrit also designed one of the Durrell’s Go Wild Gorilla’s for sponsor Coopers & Co Jersey, which was located at Trenton Square, IFC Jersey.

As an experienced artist, Amrit has successfully delivered engaging and top-quality workshops for various schools, groups, and communities throughout the UK. This presented a unique opportunity for an experienced artist to conduct interactive and creative workshops for Year 1 children at Springfield School and Rouge Bouillon School, St Helier.

JDC’s Communications Manager Sally le Cornu said: “Delivering these creative workshops to two States Primary Schools in St Helier, was an absolute joy. The school pupils were so enthusiastic and the positive effects of bringing children together within a creative setting was very evident. The environment allowed them to express themselves and gain inspiration while learning about various patterns, colours and dot art, which are integrated into MrASingh’s sculpture designs. On a personal note, these last two days delivering workshops at Springfield and Rouge Bouillon School, has been an incredible experience and we’re looking forward to working with more town schools in the future.”

The Durrell’s Tortoise Takeover trail aims to foster connection and inspire people of all ages to engage with the community and appreciate the beauty of the world outside. The Tortoise Takeover trail continues until 31 August 2023, with four of the fifty large tortoises located on the public areas delivered and maintained by JDC on the St Helier Waterfront: Les Jardins de La Mer, the Elizabeth Marina promenade in front of the Radisson Hotel, Trenton Square at the IFC and Marina Gardens (on top of the Waterfront car park).
